“What inspired me was a lovely lad and our excellent excursions out to the west coast,” she says.

Ruby Moontractor playing her newest tune “To The West” at Hum Salon, Auckland, on the 6th of July, 2013.

To The West

Jenny grabbed both feet and put ‘em in
her red boots and took herself out for
a walking.
She passed on her stroll women made
of gold and men strangled in straight
suits.
Jenny clutched her red hat down across
her brown eyes and swished her sky
blue dress.
Apron strings coming down to her
knees, she strode off to the west.

I wandered South, North, and East
And lovely they were to speak the least
But there’s a voice that calls from the
forested cliffs,
From the forested cliffs to the West

Too many pinot gris drying out her pretty
mouth, cracking and peeling her lips.
Jenny asked for water but only got
porter, told to swig it in sips.
To the west are the mountains
That’s where shes’ heading,
Red boots leading the way.
But the booze from her bottle bubbled
up to her brain,
Now her striding was turning to stumbling

(Chorus)

She met an old man with cats around his
ankles, he asked her why she’s running
away.
Jenny said “it’s only that I’m following
the sunset to the hills where I’m going
to pray.”
The old man winked and followed
her footsteps, knowing that they’d get
there that day.
And he could dip into the fountains
of youth that hid under the
mountains and say…

(Chorus)
